Lesson ComponentsSelf-esteem is how we think about and value ourselves. It’s natural for your self-esteem to go up and down as a result of your experiences.
Self-esteem is different to self-confidence – they are related, but not the same. Self-esteem is when you appreciate and value yourself, whereas self-confidence is when you believe in your abilities. It is common to have very high levels of confidence, but low self-esteem.
Having consistently low self-esteem can result in negative feelings and behaviours, potentially leading to mental illness.
Establishing a growth mindset is critical to developing and maintaining positive self-esteem. Do things to challenge yourself and
try to think about obstacles and challenges as opportunities.
