Things you can do to improve your mental health in 2023.

It’s a new year and with that comes new wellness and emotional well-being goals. Sometimes a new year can seem both daunting and exciting as it resembles fresh starts and new chapters. We’ve put together a few small tips on how you can take care of your mental health this year.

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending” – Carl Bard.

Introduce exercise

Exercise is a no-brainer, it increases your endorphins and allows you time to clear your head. You don’t have to run a marathon to get the benefits of exercise, an easy 20-30 minute walk in the morning will do a lot to raise your heart rate and ease anxiety. Keeping active and tiring yourself out will also give you better sleep.

Herbal tea

Herbal teas such as Chamomile and Lemon Balm have been proven to minimise stress, promote calmness and reduce the symptoms of generalised anxiety. Lemon balm has specifically been widely used to treat sleeplessness, depression and anxiety. Introduce a cup of tea into your morning routine to see the benefits.

Having a regular healthy diet works wonders for the mind, there is a lot to be said about food for the brain. The therapeutic process of cooking a healthy meal is also soothing. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and any food rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Sometimes when we feel stressed or anxious we lose our appetite, however it’s so important to eat and keep your physical health in check too.

Contact friends and family

When we are struggling we often retreat and disconnect from people in our lives, although this may feel like the right thing for you, it’s really vital to keep in contact with the ones you love. Explain to them that you are going through a rough patch, you don’t have to walk the road alone. Those who care about you will step up and guide you on this journey.

Control your thoughts

It’s sometimes easy to slip into a negative thought pattern. We can often spiral into a mental state of replaying the past or agonising over things we cannot change. It’s really important to try to control these invasive thoughts and turn your mind to more positive things. Think of all that you are grateful for and the good qualities that you hold. And remember, this too shall pass.

Remember that you are ok

This one is a big one, remind yourself over and over that you are OK as you are. Write down a list of all the positive things about yourself and hold onto that. Self-acceptance is a big key to contentment. We are all unique and special in our own ways and we all have our individual battles, own that and move forward with the confidence that you are OK.
